Well, for example, let's says a top Internet Marketer comes out with a new product that you review and write up a little article on, and that your competitors do the same.

Google generally tends to index pages at the start of the month and if you miss that update, you will probably need to wait till the next month to even see your entry in.

But, since your site has RSS feeds, it now gets indexed more frequently. So the chances of getting your page indexed quickly are much higher.

This gives you an advantage over the competition, as your review will show up sooner in the search results than theirs.

There are many things that a blogger should do when they start a new blog, but there are also a few things that will almost ensure failure. Here is a brief list of a few things that will almost ensure that your blog never gets off the ground.

Don’t post regularly – this is a great one if you want your new readers to never return to the site and to make sure that the search engines take their time indexing you. Posting once a week or less ensures that your readers rarely find anything new on your site and makes them go to others sites to find what they are looking for.

Post About Anything You Feel Like – People will read sites because they are interested in a niche. There are not many people who can draw and keep and audience by writing about their private musing on life. Sites that stick to a tightly defined niche or category will usually outperform sites that have more general themes.

Don’t Post on Related Blogs – If you avoid commenting constructively on similar blogs to your own then you abandon one of the best ways to draw traffic that is already interested in your topic. By creating a sense of community with bloggers in a similar niche you are helping grow that niche together – there are very few niches that aren’t big enough for more than one blog.

Steal Content – So it’s difficult to always come up with your own stuff for your new blog – yup, that’s just part of blogging. But taking other’s content from their blogs (even ones with creative commons licenses) will get you a very bad name in your niche very quickly. You need to come up with your own stuff. Sure, you can quote other blogs, but make sure you add your own value to the story.

Many print magazines offer free listings in buyers guides. Buyers guides typically have a long shelf life and are viewed as a product resource, meaning it is one of the first places consumers look when wanting to purchase an item. Typically the standard listing is free, but optionally vendors can increase their exposure by adding listings in additional categories for a nominal fee. So you've built your website. Now, what will you do to attract traffic? You can use any number of possible strategies from search engine optimization to writing articles, from issuing press releases to creating joint ventures, to name just a few. But, for now, let's start with the basics. What do concepts like search engine optimization, traffic generation, traffic conversion, affiliate marketing, email marketing and joint venture marketing mean? What impact will they have on maximizing your website traffic? Here are some basics to get you started.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization is all about writing text within your website that is not only easy to read and understand, but also which is highly attractive to internet search engines. Key words or phrases are basically popular search terms that internet surfers will input to a search engine like Google or Yahoo. Key words are important to your search engine ranking. Your mission is to figure out what those words are so that you can use them within your website text. These key words can be used in titles, subtitles, descriptions and even in the meta tags within your website.

Traffic Generation

Traffic generation is all about getting people to your website. Nothing can happen until they arrive at your doorstep. You can cultivate traffic by doing any number of things - announcing your website on radio or television, trading links with others, writing and issuing press releases, writing articles which include an information-filled byline, and engaging in joint ventures. You might want them to sign up for your newsletter or to download one of your articles or a special report. Or, you might want them to buy a product or service. Each event is an opportunity to convert visitors to take some sort of action. There are specific website tracking tools that can be used to measure and track these results. You may have heard the term conversion rate. In simplest terms, it is the number of visitors who take a defined action (like signing up for a newsletter), divided by the total number of visitors.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is all about working with others to generate revenue. It's like having your own private, commission-only sales force. An affiliate is someone who agrees to promote the products and services of someone else in exchange for some compensation, a percentage of the total sale. Domain names are site names that provide rememberable names to stand in for numeric IP addresses. Before getting a web site on line you need to have a domain name. These are the familiar web addresses such as yahoo.com that most browsers use to find a particular web site. Domain names, in fact, are pointers to a particular IP address and we use them because they are easier to remember than a series of numbers. The Domain Name System (DNS) is a system that stores information associated with domain names in a distributed database on networks, such as the Internet. The DNS is what makes it possible to attach hard-to-remember IP addresses (such as 193.456.28.8.) to easy-to-remember domain names (such as "web-hosting-guide.org")

All websites have an IP address in the form 193.456.28.8. The domain name system translates these numbers into names such as google.com. All domain names are registered in a central registry maintained by InterNIC, a subsidiary of ICANN - the organization which certifies domain name registrars. Domain names are filtered through Domain Name Servers (DNS) which link IP addresses with domain names. Each web site usually has a primary and a secondary DNS – duplicates that increase reliability.

The first step in registering a domain name is to choose it. The name can be almost anything you want, but to be most effective it should reflect the nature of your website. If you are selling scented candles, for example, it helps to have a domain name that has some reference to candles – scented-candles.org.uk for example.

The rules for domain names are simple – only letters, numbers or hyphens are allowed. Other than that, a domain name is limited to 70 characters, but you are advised to keep it as short as possible. Domain names can be upper or lower case – case is ignored by DNS but you can use a combination to make the name more recognizable. Since DNS is case-insensitive, yahoo.com can be advertised as YAHOO.COM.

Every domain name ends in a top-level domain (TLD) name, which is always either one of a small list of generic names (three or more characters), or a two characters territory code. There are several extensions available. The most common is .com - it has even entered common vocabulary as a way to express Internet activity – (I own a dot com business). Other extensions include .biz (for commercial sites), .org (for non-commercial organisations), .net (for organisations involved in Internet infrastructure) and .name (for personal names). There are also extensions with more specialized uses such as .museum, .aero, and .coop and are used exclusively by members of certain organizations. In addition to these common extensions, there can also be a country code extension such as .us (United States) or .uk (United Kingdom). The rules for using country extensions vary, so you need to check with your registrar to see if they are available to you.

All domains must be registered with a registrar that has been certified by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). There are hundreds of registrars and their prices vary considerably. Although registrars are closely regulated, they are permitted to offer their services through third parties; so many web hosts offer a domain name registration service even if they are not a registrar. The price of a domain name will usually be higher when dealing with these third-party services.

Domain names are usually registered for a minimum of one year, although you are permitted to buy up to a 10-year registration contract. Usually the longer the registration contract, the lower the price, so if you are sure you will be on the web for a considerable length of time you can benefit from a longer registration period. Most registrars also offer a discount on bulk purchases. If you own a number of domain names you can save money by transferring them all to the same registrar.

How many schemes have you seen before those promise you millions made without a dime of investment or an hour of work?

Every time I see another internet scam or “ look alike” I’m reminded of countless times fiends would invite me over to their house after work for some sort of gathering or “product party” These programs and the myriad of other “GET RICH QUICK” or “BE YOUR OWN BOSS” tactics just didn’t work for me. It didn’t for work any of my friends either.
What does hold promise is affiliate marketing. No phone calls, no downline, no pressure. There are some things to avoid though, and it helps to have some assistance when you are just starting out. All that happened was I bought too many ebooks, spent way too much money I did not have to waste and spent too much time reading them all to gather a minimum of useful information. I was led around in circles, never finding a clear path, and there was nobody available to answer my questions when I had them. It was like they were hinting at the secrets of “how to”! What’s your experience been like?

The Rich Jerk has a book too, and I’ll be the first to admit I was a hardened skeptic to all of this by the time I picked it up. Instead of repeating my prior experiences, here’s what I found.
The Rich Jerk is NOT a bible….it’s around 50 pages or so. It is a no fluff, full of powerful and proven useful tactics. I actually discovered it by accident, and almost did not give it a chance. I had been frustrated up to this point. What got me started had nothing to do with the ebook’s guarantee, but the lack of sales glitz surrounding it. Sort of begged for attention. Plus it was short.

Surprisingly simple, I finished it quickly and was amazed it could be put into practical use without long hours of tedious labor. I already had a job like that! Many of the chapters held topics and hints that were new to me, not found in the gajillion pages I had stumbled through in the other ebooks written by the top “internet Gurus!” If only I’d read The Rich Jerk first ! I could have already been making lots of money!!
Naturally, I had to prove to myself that The Rich Jerk was as good as it seemed to be. I “baited” their email support, thinking I’d find their Achilles heel there! Not so. My “bait” consisted of 20 + thoughtful questions to reveal a weak customer support function. The old sell and run tactic you see everywhere in business today. It took only a couple days to receive several pages of well directed, clear answers that were very helpful!

I’m still on the learning curve of course, but that’s to be expected with something worthwhile like this. The Rich Jerk contains basics like:
• Creating an affiliate website that directs meaningful traffic and really converts!
• Creative Search Engine Pay Per Click (PPC) Strategies
• Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Strategies
• Selling Your Own Informational Products
• Buying Wholesale and selling on Ebay

• Supplemental Information for beginners…for once there is attention and help when you need it most
• Personally Recommended Products and Services….a HUGE benefit because otherwise you have a huge amount of sifting to do alone.
